2j x 3= 36

Variable-(j is the variable)  a letter that represent a unknown number.

Expression-(2j x 3) any single number or variable or a combination of operations.

Constant-(3 is the constant) a number that does not change, increases or decreases, the value of an expression.

Numerical coefficient-(2 is the numerical coefficient) a number that multiply a variable.

Equation- mathematical statement with two expression that have the same value. (a scale)

eg. x+3=3 , y-7=(4) , 3a-2=a+2 , b=4

Identify the value of variable.
 Isolate the variable:

Use opposite operation:
Add - Subtract
Subtract - Add
Multiply - Divide
Divide - Multiply

Remember, when did something on the left side you have to do the same thing in the right side.

Remember to always check your answer.

c= cup

c + 3
Let say there are 6 counters in the cup

6 + 3
6 + 3= 9

^^^ That is an equation...

_______

3c + 2

3(4) + 2

3 x 4 = 12

12+2= 14*

* over all marbles

________

Now try to answer this:

4 x + 3

x= 3

Answer:

Table of Values- a table showing two sets of related numbers

Table:

how many squares in figure # 60?

Answer is 60= 121

x2+1 is the expression

2(60)+1=121

2f+1= s

^^f= figure

model the expression

2y + 4 with cups and counters

then show if:

y= 1

y= 3

y=1

2y + 4=

2(1) + 4=

2+4=

6=6

y= 3

2y + 4=

2(3)+4=

6+4=

10=10

Variable and Expressions

Variable- a letter that represents an unknown number.
For example: a, x, w

Expression- any single number or variable or a combination of operations (+, -, x, /) involving numbers and variables.
For example: 5, r, 8t, x+9, 2y-7

Value- a known or calculated amount.

Constant- a number that does not change
- increases or decreases the value of an expression

Numerical coefficient- a number that multiplies a variable.
For example:

Notes For May 2, 2011

Integers
- positive and negative whole numbers including zero
eg. 1, 7, 63, 23783457, -9, -985, -56422147, 0

Integers are not decimals, fractions, percent, ratio
eg. 65%, 7.6, 1:2, 3/4 are not integers

Zero pair
- a pair of integers representing +1 and -1
eg. + - this pair represents zero pair because (+1) + (-1)= 0

Examples of zero pair
(+2) + (-2)=0

(+3) + (-3)=0

Predict the sum of any pair of opposite integers.
Opposite integers are two integers with the same numeral, but different signs.
eg. +2 and -2 or +123 and -123

What if the negative comes first.
(-8) + (+8)= 0
It's still going to be zero.

Here is some problems for practice..

(+5) + (-1)=

(+15263) + (-15263)=

(-6) + (+8)=

Interpret Circle graphs
-circle graph is a graph that represents data using sections of a circle

Sector
- sounds like section
- a section of a circle formed by two radii and the arc of a circle connecting the radii

A sector is a percent of the whole

Creating circle graphs

Central angle
- an angle formed by two radii of a circle
- the vertex of the angle is at the center of the circle

How many degrees in a circle
-360 degrees
- 2 protractors

Here is a link about circle graph

Circle

Parts of the circle
Radius- the distance from the center of a circle to the edge, represented by the variable r
Diameter- the distance across a circle through its center, represented by d

Relationship between radius and diameter
-diameter is twice longer than radius
- radius is half of diameter

Constructing circles
1. compass
2. trace a circle
3. string

Concentric circles
-same center point different radius

Circumference
- the distance around the circle
- usually represented by c
- this is a linear measurement

pi
- the ratio of the circle of a circle to its diameter
- approximate 3.14

Here is a link about circles

Probability
  • the likelihood or chance of an event occurring something happening.
  • favourable outcomes over possible outcomes
  • can be expressed as a fraction, ratio, or a percent.
Favourable Outcomes
  • is a successful result in a probability experiment.
Possible Outcome
  • one possible result of a probability experiment.
p(blue) is a way to say probability of a spinner.
