Probability Continued

Organizing Outcomes

1st way chart or table

Independent events- the outcome of one event has no effect on the outcome of another event.

Sample space- all possible outcomes of an experiment.

For example:

The question in the class is: A coin is flipped and a 6 sided die is rolled. These 2 events are called independent outcomes.

a.) Use a table or chart and list all the possible outcomes...

Second way to organize outcomes

Tree diagrams- a diagram used to organize outcomes contains a branch for each possible outcome of an event.

Probability Notes

Probability

Is the likelihood or chance of an event occurring to something happening.

Probability can be expressed as a Fraction, Ratio, or percent.

Favourable outcome is a successful result in a probability experiment.

Possible outcome is one possible result of a probability experiment.

Probability is Favourable outcome over Possible outcome.

Example:

Favourable outcome

___________________

Possible outcome

p(6) is a way to say probability of rolling a 6 on a die.

Probability-the likelihood or chance of an event occuring (something happening).
Probability is favourable outcomes over possible outcomes.

  • Probability can be expressed as a fraction, ratio, or percent.
  • Favourable Outcome is a successful resort in a probability experiment.
  • Possible Outcome is one possible result of a probability experiment.
