Variable and Expressions

Variable- a letter that represents an unknown number.
For example: a, x, w

Expression- any single number or variable or a combination of operations (+, -, x, /) involving numbers and variables.
For example: 5, r, 8t, x+9, 2y-7

Value- a known or calculated amount.

Constant- a number that does not change
- increases or decreases the value of an expression

Numerical coefficient- a number that multiplies a variable.
For example:

Notes For May 2, 2011

Integers
- positive and negative whole numbers including zero
eg. 1, 7, 63, 23783457, -9, -985, -56422147, 0

Integers are not decimals, fractions, percent, ratio
eg. 65%, 7.6, 1:2, 3/4 are not integers

Zero pair
- a pair of integers representing +1 and -1
eg. + - this pair represents zero pair because (+1) + (-1)= 0

Examples of zero pair
(+2) + (-2)=0

(+3) + (-3)=0

Predict the sum of any pair of opposite integers.
Opposite integers are two integers with the same numeral, but different signs.
eg. +2 and -2 or +123 and -123

What if the negative comes first.
(-8) + (+8)= 0
It's still going to be zero.

Here is some problems for practice..

(+5) + (-1)=

(+15263) + (-15263)=

(-6) + (+8)=

Interpret Circle graphs
-circle graph is a graph that represents data using sections of a circle

Sector
- sounds like section
- a section of a circle formed by two radii and the arc of a circle connecting the radii

A sector is a percent of the whole

Creating circle graphs

Central angle
- an angle formed by two radii of a circle
- the vertex of the angle is at the center of the circle

How many degrees in a circle
-360 degrees
- 2 protractors

Circle

Parts of the circle
Radius- the distance from the center of a circle to the edge, represented by the variable r
Diameter- the distance across a circle through its center, represented by d

Relationship between radius and diameter
-diameter is twice longer than radius
- radius is half of diameter

Constructing circles
1. compass
2. trace a circle
3. string

Concentric circles
-same center point different radius

Circumference
- the distance around the circle
- usually represented by c
- this is a linear measurement

pi
- the ratio of the circle of a circle to its diameter
- approximate 3.14

Answering Joshua's Probability Question

Joshua's question is...
What is the probability of spinning a green on this spinner? Please express as a fraction, ratio and a percent.
My answer is...

Fraction: 2/8 simplified to 1/4

Ratio: 1:4

Percent: 25%

Notes For January 17, 2011

Probability
  • the likelihood or chance of an event occurring something happening.
  • favourable outcomes over possible outcomes
  • can be expressed as a fraction, ratio, or a percent.
Favourable Outcomes
  • is a successful result in a probability experiment.
Possible Outcome
  • one possible result of a probability experiment.
p(blue) is a way to say probability of a spinner.

I'm sorry if there is no video.I tried uploading a video but didn't work.

Order of Operation- The Language of Math

B- Brackets
E- Exponents
M- Multiplication
D- Division
A- Addition
S- Subtraction
Multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction have to be in order from left to right.
  1. Annie has been asked to calculate 1.7+6/2. She claims the answer is 3.85. Do you agree? Explain why or why not.
I don't agree with her answer because she added first before multiplying. But if we follow order of operation, multiplication should be done first before addition.

2. Put brackets in the following expression to get the largest value possible. What problem solving strategy did you use? 3*2.8+6.4/4

3. Create a problem that could be solved using the following expression. 2.5+1.25+5*1.6

Correction For Number 5

__T_5. A coordinate grid has a following set of ordered pairs: (-2,-5), (0,-4), (3,0), (4,1), (5,2), (6,3). The point (0,-4) is out of place.

The answer is true because I discovered that all the points except (0,-4) lie on the same line when I connected them.
